The 5 senses of children: Touch

The development of the senses is very important for the evolution of the child since they constitute the vehicle through which the little one comes into contact with the outside, knows it and, consequently, evolves in their learning. We must not forget that thanks to the senses we communicate with other human beings and establish relationships of affection with them.

The touch
It is the first sense that the newborn learns to use. Until the third month of life, the baby's tactile sensitivity is mainly concentrated in the head, mouth and trunk. The little one responds to pressure, texture, temperature, proximity, and pain. Hence the importance of breastfeeding (a moment of communication par excellence between mother and child), caresses, hugs and bathing. Massages also occupy a prominent place in the development of the baby. In addition to transmitting affection through skin contact, they allow your relaxation and well-being.

Between six and nine months of life, the little one begins to explore the world around him. Your trunk, arms, legs, hands, and fingers become the perfect exploration tools. This is the time to let him experiment with different textures, temperatures, and shapes. As he cannot move yet and tends to put everything in his mouth, the use of baby gyms with objects of different characteristics is an excellent stimulation resource.

As the child grows and his sense of touch develops, it is very important that he begin to process and relate the information that the experience provides. A game that tends to amuse the little ones a lot consists of putting their hands in different cardboard boxes, inside which objects of various sizes, shapes and textures have been previously arranged. Guessing what the object they have touched is after describing its characteristics, becomes quite a challenge.
