In Galicia, girls will be able to decide next school year whether to wear the skirt, pants or tracksuit of the school uniform.
A few days ago, a proposal by the group En Marea in Galicia was unanimously approved that prohibits the obligation to wear a skirt for girls in schools. But what does this approval entail?
Equality for boys and girls in dress
As of the next school year, 2018-2019, in Galicia girls will be able to decide whether to wear the skirt, pants or tracksuit of the school uniform. The Xunta de Galicia will work for and for this measure. This is intended to take a further step towards equality between men and women. And, what better way to start from the school where so many schools have decided what clothes children should wear and what clothes each gender?
Deputy Luca Chao affirmed that the mandatory use of the skirt in the girls can restrict your freedom, exactly "freedom of movement" He said. Girls have been forced to wear uniforms in schools for many years to dress in a way determined by their status as gender. Girls or women do not wear skirts or dresses daily to define their femininity. It is no longer only freedom of decision, it is allowing oneself to be what one is, comfort, since the minors play the same games as their peers.
Work for gender freedom
Equality goes through the elimination of differences in the clothing of boys and girls, differentiation by colors, breaking barriers.
There are many schools that make the use of uniform skirts mandatory for girls. Many are in Galicia and many in the rest of Spain. Chao also said that it seems that it has more weight for a girl to go beautiful to play happy and carefree. It is a very negative and poor message so that it penetrates children, especially today that extreme relevance is given to the physical. Equality goes through the elimination of differences in the clothing of boys and girls, of the differentiation by colors, roles ...
Regarding the proposal, it is still necessary to clarify and decide the points for this measure to be fulfilled next school year. It was also discussed that it would be positive to implement a unisex uniform, something that has not yet taken shape. It now remains to work together on this implementation and fight for other Autonomous Communities to join.. The union has always been strength.
Freedom to decide and be
For years there is differentiation and discrimination gender-based in many respects. There is no equality in salary, in social consideration ... Many times we do not bet on the same capacity of women to carry out jobs that men generally do ... Force girls to wear clothing considered feminine or that has been implemented that way forever only generates more division, prosecutes, underestimates and stigmatizes them.
The girl can speak, decide and needs to feel safe and comfortable with what she is and what she represents for others, but for herself. Children are asked daily to have values, ideals and not remain silent in the face of injustices. We must teach by example and teach rights and freedoms for all, for girls too. A time has come when things seem to take course and there are no silences or fears. Little by little, goals are achieved and goals are exceeded, which will positively feed the whole of society.
