It has always been believed that mathematics, English, and science are the most important and essential subjects of all educational content. The students who were good at solving problems and operations were the ones who shone the most. On the other hand, there were students who preferred music and art but on many occasions they went unnoticed.
My best friend in fourth grade was amazing at music and art. He was talented, passionate, and excited when it came time for art education or music education. However, English, math, and science were the most difficult subjects for him to pass. Teachers (including art and music teachers) did not nurture or believe in her talent.
Art and music: much more important in the classroom
Students who are passionate about painting, drawing, dancing, doing plays, and playing instruments (for example) should have more opportunities. They should be able to have more hours within the educational center to promote and develop their skills. There are schools that in the afternoons teach a plus in English or a plus in mathematics.
Why isn't there a plus for art and music? That I would like to know (I admit that I have not found the answer yet).
What is clear is that these subjects go far above the content of educational centers. And unfortunately, it seems that in a few years music and art will have no place in the educational system since each time they are having fewer hours and they are becoming optional.
Mozart was brilliant and he was unscientific
Be careful, don't get me wrong: I have absolutely nothing against students with a talent for science and mathematics. What I want to say is that the students who are passionate about art and music are also brilliant. In history there were great geniuses who dedicated themselves to music, art and acting. And I have the feeling that they are less recognized.
Many teachers say that "this student is amazing at math" but rarely does he express himself «This student is incredible in art and music. Has a lot of talent". In other words, future artists may feel a bit rejected and misunderstood within some educational centers.
Extracurricular activities to develop skills
The extracurricular activities of theater, music and art are great. But it shouldn't be the only option for parents with talented kids in those areas. Schools should be able to look beyond math and English (be careful, I'm not saying they are not important). Art, music, and acting have almost always taken a back seat in classrooms.
I agree that extracurricular activities should nurturing student talent but not starting from scratch. Schools would have to develop a new and reformed program for arts and music education. A program that will be adapted to all students and that will help develop artistic and musical talents in students.
Music and art should not be assessed with exams
The educational system has the absurd mania of wanting to evaluate absolutely everything. He wants to label all the students. Music and art are not subjects that have to pass tests or evaluations (at least not in primary education). Music and art classes should be spaces of freedom, imagination, stimulation and creativity.
What is the use of a primary school child knowing perfectly how to play the flute? What's the point of taking art exams? And what is the point of telling students how to paint flowers, cars, and houses? I believe that this is not how musical or artistic education is promoted. But unfortunately, in many educational centers this is the case.
Students need art and music in the centers
The vast majority of us know that stress, overwhelm and pressure revolve around students. Exams, homework and an outdated educational system generate discomfort, insecurities, distrust and demotivation. Music and art help students manage those emotions. It helps them relax and regain their confidence.
They are classes in which they can play, they can get up, they can talk with their classmates and they feel free. They feel more comfortable, more understood, and calmer. Listening to music, for example, makes students regain positive energy and excitement. They are subjects in which you can laugh and in which creativity and imagination are important.
What do you think?
So why are there people who fight for music and art to cease to exist in the centers? Why are there people who prevent future artists, musicians, dancers and actors from developing their talents? All subjects should be equally important in schools. And of course, music, art and theater should be more present in classrooms.
What is your opinion? Do you think that art and music are subjects that are forgotten and rejected by the educational system and centers?
