Amniotic fluid is the substance that protects the baby from external lesions and helps it feed and develop while it grows in the womb, so it is extremely important that it is in good condition, since any change in color or composition could cause problems for the baby.
This protective fluid is formed in the fourth week of pregnancy, initially only with the filtering of the blood plasma, but later the baby's urine also contributes to its formation. Although its main function is to protect the baby from blows, external injuries and even from the pressure of the maternal organs, it also serves to maintain an ideal temperature for the baby, helps him to have a correct development and, even, feeds him.
As we can see, it is a very important fluid, so in obstetric check-ups the amount and composition of the amniotic fluid is checked. From the 38th week of pregnancy, it is usual for it to begin to decrease because the body begins to prepare for childbirth. When the water breaks, it means that the baby's bag has broken and what comes out is the amniotic fluid.
If you have broken waters you should look at the color of the liquid. If everything goes correctly, it will be yellowish or transparent, on the other hand, if you see that it is greenish, you should go immediately to the hospital, as that means that your baby has made his first stool (meconium), which indicates that there is fetal suffering and also if your baby ingesting meconium can cause serious problems.
If you see that the liquid has a pinkish tone it means that there has been a recent bleeding, on the other hand if the tone is dark red it means that the bleeding has been some time. Either way, you should go to the doctor to check that there is no problem.
