School day: the schedule is not the only thing to change

There are quite a few autonomous communities and educational centers that have decided change the split day for the continuous one. But is the school day the biggest problem? Nowadays, many students leave class at two o'clock and do not have to return to school until the next day. And that's great!

Yes, it's great. But the school day is not the only thing to change in education. It seems that there is a debate around the differences between split and continuous working hours. And because of this debate, many experts affirm that it is training students as future submissive employees.

Is the school day the only thing to discuss in education?

It is clear that from primary education (and even earlier) children spend many hours in schools. Despite being an exaggerated time spent in the classrooms, I don't think the school day is the biggest problem in education.

The biggest problem (at least it is for me) is the way of teaching. I know that little by little the methodology is changing. But we have had to spend more than twenty years with it until we have decided to advance a little. Even today, rote learning is valued more than active learning.

Let me explain: students have a five-hour school day in which they do the same things every day. The teacher teaches the class, solves the students' doubts and sends homework. It is six hours in which children and young people are treated like working adults in an office.

Five hours in which creativity, imagination, decision-making, critical thinking and analytical skills are often not taken into account. Six hours in which the students are passive subjects who nod to the teachers to say that they are listening.

If not the hours, what is the real problem?

The biggest problem is not the school day. Yes it is that students after five hours of class have a mountain of homework. The problem is that not all schools have taken a step forward and have joined the educational change.

The problem is that it is still believed that the bright students are the ones with XNUMX's and XNUMX's. And the problem is that in educational centers there are students with musical and artistic talent and they are not taken into account because they think math and English are more important.

The debate on the school day does not reflect (not even close) the great problems that the Spanish educational system has. In this way, more relevance is being given to the students' schedule than to introducing new methodologies in the classrooms.

They are talking about hours students spend in classrooms but few proposals are made for strategies, activities and tools so that students learn meaningfully and authentically.

If the school day is not reduced, unless it is active

There are families that are really juggling to reconcile work with personal and family life. I understand that for them a reduction of the school day would be complicated for work reasons. But at least, if students have to continue attending the same classes and hours make it more active.

At least that the educational centers go beyond the exams. Beyond grades and number labels. That teachers and teachers value the positive aspects of students. That they motivate them, that they support them and that they get involved with them. Students have to be the protagonists of their own learning.

At least they can express their emotions, that they can debate and say what they think. At least the classrooms move away from educational submission.

What about extracurricular activities?

Possibly the subject of extracurricular activities has to be dealt with separately. But there are parents who want their children to continue with the same energy after the school day. And what do they do? They are enrolled in painting classes, reinforcement classes, an English academy, various sports ...

Let's think that the school day for children and young people does not usually end until eight at night. Between extracurricular activities and homework, What time do they have left to enjoy?

Learning languages is great, practicing sports and developing the potential and skills of children and young people is also great. But everything in its proper measure. After each school day, students need to rest, disconnect and be calm.

And you, Do you think that the timetable and the school day is the main problem in education?

How right you are, to fix education you have to start with the way children are approached and when they leave school they should not look like businessmen with meetings... I, as a leisure and free time monitor, have seen children with agendas fuller than the president. I feel sorry because they don't even charge half of what he does. If they did it to an adult, they would already be on strike and demonstrating XDXDXD.
The continuous day does not take into account the moments of activity of the children's brain, many of these active times are wasted and they are made to learn in hours in which the brain is as if disconnected, it does not take advantage of what they are taught then.
Now they want to introduce a new timetable in Catalonia, they call it a healthy timetable, but not even they believe it. That reconciles, they say ... no way. which is to take advantage of lunchtime to educate in values... of course because until now we haven't done it at home, right? What values do they want to educate them in that I cannot do as I have done up to now? I'll tell you, in independence values... as if I saw it, well, not with my daughter, because I don't feel like it, because the constitution says so and because as long as I pay her child support and take care of her and I go out of my way for her a mindungui of 3 a quarter is not going to eat the coconut.
