What is memory loss in pregnant women?

The mummy or mommy brain is a memory loss that women usually suffer at the beginning of pregnancy and that lasts for a few months after having your child. Before this, do not panic and do not give it too much importance, since it is something normal that occurs throughout the gestation process and that usually disappears when the baby reaches its first year of age.

Although it can be something that worries any woman who suffers from it, mummies make these women improve their the memory when it comes to becoming mothers with respect to the rest of women who have not been mothers. Then we explain a little more about this memory loss suffered by most pregnant women and why it usually occurs.

What is the mummy?

The momnesia or amnesia of mothers as we have already commented above, is a temporary loss of memory that occurs in the short term and that usually affects a fairly high percentage of pregnant women, specifically 60% of them. This amnesia occurs throughout the pregnancy and continues for another year after giving birth.

As we have already mentioned above, it is something normal and is due to the great change in hormones that women undergo when they are pregnant. This flow of hormones causes them to reach quite high levels and in the end this affects brain activity, giving rise to the aforementioned episodes of memory loss or temporary amnesia.

It is therefore quite common for a pregnant woman not to suddenly remember what she was going to do, where an object is or what she did the day before. Luckily, and as it has been shown after several quite reliable studies, the mummy doesn't last forever and brain activity is working properly again by the baby's first birthday.

In addition to this, it has been possible to affirm that mothers who suffer such episodes of amnesia during pregnancy, they tend to improve their attention span in relation to other women who have not been mothers.

What is the mummy?

There are scientific studies that have found that the cause of such memory losses is due to the high levels of hormones that mothers suffer during the entire pregnancy process. Hormones such as prolactin, progesterone or cortisol are the real ones responsible for the amnesia suffered in pregnancy. However the main hormone that causes mummies is none other than oxycytin, popularly known as the love hormone. This hormone is secreted in large amounts during childbirth and lactation, being responsible for the connection that exists between the mother and the child.

The mother's brain focuses all its attention on making the most of the bond with her newborn child, so it is normal that almost all her memory is focused on this activity. This is what will cause such amnesia for a period of one year. In addition, it must be remembered that lack of sleep during the first months of the baby's life will also cause these memory losses. Luckily after the year, the mother returns to sleep much better and brain activity improves significantly, with which the aforementioned amnesia gradually disappears.

As you have seen, if you suffer continuous memory loss throughout your pregnancy and during the first months of your little one's life, you shouldn't give him anything of importance. It is something quite normal and that a percentage of pregnant women suffer. In a short time this amnesia is over and the mother recovers all brain activity.
